Halving the mortality rates for Indigenous children under five years appears to be on track for Closing the Gap on Indigenous disadvantage, according to the government's 2013 progress report and Shadow Report published by the Close the Gap Campaign Steering Committee.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard said since 2008 leaders pledged to halve the gap in mortality rates for Indigenous children under five within a decade, real progress had been made, and if current trends continued the targets would be met.
