Creative midwifery education.

It is often claimed that midwifery is both an art and a science (Downe 1998).

The Australian College of Midwives (ACM) recognised this philosophy at its 2011 biennial conference in Sydney. In addition to the usual scientific program, the ACM ran a concurrent 'creative arts festival' at the conference. Activities included theatrical acts, singing workshops, plays, sculptures, drumming workshops, story-telling, interpretive dance, poetry and an art exhibition.

A 'yarning' table was available where delegates came together in a quiet space to 'yarn' both about midwifery, and created knitted items. Delegates knitted squares that were joined to make blankets for the Hamlin Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia. Delegates also...
