Dementia research vital, says Australian of the Year.

More money for research into dementia is 2013 Australian of the Year Ira Buttrose's key message and aim for this year.

"We need younger researchers to come into this field and take on the challenge that the brain and dementia represents. Why do some people develop dementia and others don't? Why do some people display symptoms but do not go on to develop dementia? We need to look at all things we know about dementia as a disease and discover the answers to one of the most baffling mysteries of this time."

Ita Buttrose was recognised as Australian of the Year, for amongst many of her accomplishments, her stellar media career and commitment to medical education and health care. She says she feels honoured to be this year's recipient of the award as "something you never imagine will happen to you."
