Well, here we are, already into the second month of 2012, most of us back at work, batteries re-charged with plenty of vigour for new developments and projects planned for the year ahead. I hope you all took some time for yourselves over what is often a joyful, yet busy festive season. For many of us, it's not always joyful, for those who are ill themselves, or their partners, family members, friends and colleagues. I share with you in my column on page 17 thoughts of a friend and colleague Robyn Parkes who passed away; a wonderful woman and strong unionist who contributed significantly to the education of the nursing and midwifery profession and the ANF.

As stats go, 2012 is the 2012th year of the Anno Domini, the 12th year of the third millennium and of the 21st century and the third of the 2010s. This year has plenty of expectation: for some, who follow the ancient culture of Maya...
