Nursing researchers from Monash, Plymouth and Brighton Universities have been trialling a new simulation-based education program.
The [FIRST.sup.2]ACT (Feedback Incorporating Review and Simulation Techniques to Act on Clinical Trends) (Buykx et al 2011) aims to improve patient safety by giving nursing students and registered nurses an opportunity to develop their emergency management skills in a safe environment.
Following formative assessment and after a brief handover to the patient (either a computerised mannequin or a patient actor), participants undertake two or three scenarios simulating a medical emergency.
