The recent formal heritage listing of the house of one of Australia's most remarkable nurses, Mary Anne Bessie Pocock (1863-1946), has given recognition of her active service in two wars and a lifetime contribution to nursing.
Sister Mary Anne Bessie Pocock trained and worked at Sydney Hospital from 1890-1900. She was one of the 14 nurses from NSW sent to the Boer War in the Army Nursing Service Reserve, established in 1899 the first official female army nurses' organisation in the Australian colonies. Some of these nurses were sent by the government, while others were self funded. The nurses accompanied the second contingent, which departed on 17 January 1900 on board the ship Moravian, to serve in the Boer War. Bessie Pocock was one of four nurses who remained in South Africa and served with the NSW Army Medical Corps units, in British hospitals, field, stationary or base. on hospital ships...
