The safe storage and management of the Collection is core to the National Library's responsibilities, along with maintenance and management of the associated storage areas.

The Library was constructed in 1968, and was extended in 1985. It is heritage-listed as a building of national and cultural significance, and over half of its Collection is stored below the ground-level floor in the main building.

With the Collection valued at almost $1.5 billion, effective maintenance of the main building is of critical importance.
