Alcohol use disorders are one of the leading causes of morbidity in Australia. The impact is wide-ranging and extensive, resulting in considerable burden on both the individual and on the health care system as a whole. In general hospital settings, alcohol dependent patients account for a high proportion of all admissions and are often frequent users of inpatient services. However, despite repeated access to hospital services, patient outcomes do not appear to have improved.
