There is overwhelming support for the mental health nurse incentive program from GPs and patients, research shows.
GPs welcomed improved access to mental health care offered through the initiative and appreciated the support of mental health nurses, the study published recently in Australian Health Review found.
The findings were part of a larger evaluation of the mental health nurse incentive program (MHNIP) conducted between 2008 and 2010 in and around Ipswich, Queensland.
The MHNIP was established in 2007 for general practices, primary health care services and private psychiatry services to employ mental health nurses to assist with care for patients with severe mental health problems.
