Recent events at the WTO meetings in Cancun were disappointing. Negotiations stalled over the "Singapore issues" (trade and investment, competition policy, standards and the like) and most of the trade ministers left empty handed. There were again mass anti WTO demonstrations, with one unfortunate event in the form of a suicide by a South Korean farmer protesting about the agriculture trade negotiations However, in the midst of negative headlines about missed opportunities and stalled negotiations, there are four key considerations to take into account in the wash-up to Cancun.
