There are occasions when the sequence of events constituting a crime takes place over a sufficiently lengthy period to leave evidence of a protracted time interval: Loveday (1991); MacDonell (1993); James (1999b). This may typically occur when:

(1) A first assault is followed by a second assault some time later.
(2) An attempt is made to alter the position(s) of the victim(s) or items associated with the scene after the assault.
(3) The victim is removed from the scene.
(4) A clean-up of the scene is attempted by the perpetrator.
(5) There is more than one victim.
